When to Treat Something as a Dental Emergency
If you are in pain or something has changed suddenly in your mouth, it is always better to get it checked. Common emergencies include:
Even if you are unsure, it is always worth calling. We can help you decide what to do next.
Knocked-Out Tooth
Time matters here. Acting quickly gives the best chance of saving the tooth.
What to do:
- Call our office immediately
- Pick up the tooth by the crown, not the root
- Rinse gently with water if needed, do not scrub it
- Try placing it back into the socket if possible
- If not, store it in milk or inside your cheek to keep it moist
- Come in as soon as possible
The faster you are seen, the better the chances of successful reattachment.

Lost Filling or Crown
A lost filling or crown can leave the tooth sensitive and vulnerable, especially to temperature and pressure.
If this happens:
- Keep the crown or filling safe if you find it
- Avoid chewing on that side
- Book an appointment as soon as possible
In many cases, it can be repaired or re-cemented if addressed quickly.
Cracked or Broken Tooth
Even small cracks can become painful or worsen over time. Larger breaks may expose sensitive areas of the tooth.
At home, you can:
The treatment depends on how deep the damage goes, but early care often means more options to save the tooth.

Loose or Dislodged Tooth
A tooth that feels loose or has shifted after an injury needs prompt attention.
Until you are seen:
We will assess the tooth and stabilize it whenever possible, and guide you through next steps based on healing and condition.
